51/306 Me 09/29/09
Yesterday I saw the Ear-Nose-Throat Specialist. He said in two weeks I’ll be back to normal. My hope to finally be better quickly turned to discouragement when I woke up with a nasty migraine. I slept another day away. But I was just glad to be able to sleep.

You were happy to distribute a page of fall coupons. You were just as happy to answer my question about wintering those huge Elephant Ear plants. Dig the bulb. Alternatively, if potted, following the first frost, cut off leaves and take the pot in. Or, take in the whole plant.
49/306 Richard 09/27/09
I saw you riding your bike to church, coat flapping in the wind. I’d heard that several times a week you ride to a neighboring town, twenty miles away. When I told you it was you who inspired me to begin riding my bicycle to work, you smiled in delight.
48/306 Bubby 09/26/09
Throughout the day at the tournament you ate doughnuts, and bags of chips, ran circles, raced your brother, played peek-a-boo, and rolled down the hill. Your pants revealed your chubby buns and were so tight you struggled to get up off the ground at the bottom of the hill. Entertainment!
47/306 Eli 09/25/09
He, along with Mae, taught my Sunday school class, one of many years they taught. His prayers always included the phrase, ‘unhindered and unmolested,’ describing and giving thanks for our ability to worship together. But his claim to fame through fifth grade eyes was his ability to wiggle his ears.
46/306 Roy 09/24/09
I remember Grandpa Klopfenstein…
playing on the floor with the great-grandchildren
playing Scrabble quite competitively
telling stories of grievances from the past
reciting poetry
preparing to teach Sunday school
watching boxing and wrestling on tv
giving wet kisses on the forehead
laughing in delight when Grandma sat on his lap

The suspense intensified as he sat down in the middle of the living room floor. The word was that Grandpa Lantz, tall and lanky as he was, could actually put both legs behind his head! The urging and daring and cheering and laughter finally paid off. And he did it!
44/306 Mrs. Hunt 09/22/09
The shop had been closed for ten years, open by appointment only. As we scattered in awe of the things we saw, I heard Dad ask, “How much for the whole store?” You were less than five feet tall, bun and all, but you knew your inventory, named your price.
43/306 Inez 09/21/09
You’ve always been frail, even sickly.
Yet in these last years you held your own with your sisters.
Now you’re even thinner than before…
certainly thinner than we could have imagined.
But your spirit, your heart, and your welcome
grow even bigger and stronger and deeper
as your body fades.

Sweet little four year old
Dark hair with a little turquoise headband
Beautiful big dark eyes
You cried when you’re sister didn’t give in
Cried when you wanted mamma to hold you
Cried when the offering basket passed you by
Continued to cry even when it came back to you

41/306 Kay Anne 09/19/09
Eleven years old, now in middle school
You can’t wait until you’re eighteen
So you can say bad words
Don’t think I’ve ever seen you pout
Though I’m sure you’re able
You love to eat whatever
Is fresh from the garden
Or cold from the old fridge in the garage

Dressed in your suit and tie you slowly approached in the modern art section and said, “You really have a wonderful opportunity today. You essentially have the exhibit to yourself. Take as long as you like to appreciate, reflect, meditate.” “Yes,” you agreed, “It is very quiet and quite peaceful.”
39/306 Great-Grandma Feilitz 09/17/09
The minute we walked into the kitchen through the back porch door, she stopped whatever she was doing to welcome us with a kiss. I will always treasure the last time I walked through the back porch door, and found her having fallen asleep at the table, reading her Bible.
38/306 Kirsten 09/16/09
You often came home with grievances. One of your little friends wasn’t treated fairly. Another was being too bossy or possessive…little children facing big life challenges. When I had heard enough I was reminded, your keen sense of justice is a gift, a treasure to nurture, not a fault.
37/306 Lane 09/15/09
Barely six years old, you came trudging home from a half day of Kindergarten, dragging your backpack behind. It was early spring, but you were already aware of the way that school demands would infringe on your time outdoors. “I just don’t have any free time any more,” you moaned!
36/306 Anne 09/14/09
After that last peer pastors’meeting she stood awkwardly behind. She repeated what she had already said, telling me, “I’m going to see the lavender fields!” I said that I remembered…and to fill her anticipatory silence, I asked her to think of me when she was there among the lavender.
35/306 Elizabeth 09/13/09
When we arrived you were already seated at Erin’s side. It wasn’t long before we started to draw together, first on my special paper and then…all over our bulletins! You were quite surprised and delighted at every move: tracing, drawing, shading, coloring! Your welcome made me feel right at home.
34/306 Dixie 09/12/09
You love to play games, especially cards!
You’re happy to cook and bake and prepare a feast.
You also like to keep all things in order.
You’re often funny even when you don’t intend to be.
In life you’ve adjusted to loss, adapted,
and found the strength to live on.

Your ear-to-ear grin greeted us!
Prepared for our arrival,
by cleaning up the whole apartment.
You were delighted to see Erin!
Talked and talked-
jokes, stories about your work,
and reports about your week.
You walked with a skip
and literally kicked up your heels!
“Exerting energy in acceptable manner!”

32/306 Mom at the Pittsburgh Zoo 09/10/09
You insisted that the furry little animals who were,
at the time nowhere to be seen were beavers.
You were, after all, the zoo expert!
So when we passed the sign, that clearly read, ‘sea otters,’
we just had to wait to hear the interchange!
And your husband...was delighted!

To pass the long work hours more quickly
or perhaps wishing you were a docent instead of a security guard
or simply expressing your tendency to extroversion
or covertly articulating a deeply held political persuasion
you offered the visitors your own words:
questions, learnings and comments on the dark painting.

You were so smart, my first grade friend, at reading and spelling and math! We played together at recess and I went home with you after school one day. The big hill by your house was perfect for rolling down faster and faster until we stopped, dizzied, at the bottom!
29/306 Erin 09/07/09
Twenty-six years ago today, nine days before your due date, you surprised us with an early entrance! I only hoped it was the real thing! Three hours, some good coaching, hard work, an attempt to return home, and a little Demerol later, we heard your sweet cry! Happy Birthday, Erin!
28/306 Riley 09/06/09
Yesterday we made a new friend! Shy at first, she made up for it later in the afternoon! Didn’t eat much lunch…but she loved the fresh pears! Today is her “Hello Kitty” birthday party. Now she’s four, no longer three! Bret thinks she probably slept the whole way home.

You’re getting a tiller for the back of your mower…planning on tilling for people in the spring and planting your own garden! They’ve asked you to sing in the choir again! Baxter’s at the pet beauty shop! Ms. Dunning is coming home! You accept some pears…and you’re gone.
25/306 Brenda 09/03/09
Compassionate and caring to everyone you meet
You laugh with those who laugh
And cry with those who cry
Energy and excitement just burst out
Busy with home and work and serving
Sharing, listening, praying, encouraging
You’re stronger than you ever dreamed
and more dependent than you may have hoped

I saw you in the distance down the path and finally caught up! Joanna got to ride in the stroller, but you rode your little bicycle all the way to the Dough Box for a sprinkle doughnut! You worked so hard…kept peddling…rested sometimes…then you zoomed ahead again!
23/306 Gavin 09/01/09
The doorbell rang…you bounded in shouting,
“I haven’t seen you since my grandma died!”
My how you’d grown!
You said you love school this year!
We loaded you up with garden goodies.
You left with pear juice running down your arm,
waving, on the back of your dad’s motorcycle.

Your little bottom lip puckered up and your face turned toward the floor. Your momma said you were sad because it was time to go to bed and you hadn’t gotten to do everything you wanted to do today. You hadn’t had any time to draw or paint or color!
